Why Was Bandit Queen Banned in India?

Many are searching the internet for information on why the Bandit Queen movie is banned in India. The reason for banning Bandit Queen movie is its content; it has sensual scenes, wipe out blood scenes, religious and forbidden scenes. 

At present, it is available on OTT. Still, in late 1995, it was released in theatres after altered unwanted scenes by the CBFC and is dated ‘A’ (Only for Adults).  It also telecasts after 17 minutes of cutscenes on television.

After releasing the movie Bandit Queen, Phoolan Devi mentioned that it is not real; maybe the movie makers added their assumptions. 

Who was Phoolan Devi – Bandit Queen Movie – Real Life Story

Phoolan Devi was born on 10 August 1963 in the village Gorha Ka Purwa in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh; she was from a Mallah subcaste from a low-income family background. 

At the age of 11, she married, and later, she faced a lot of abuse from various persons; she joined a gang of dacoits, which dacoits used to rob from a higher caste people. After being in a dacoit gang, she killed the person who abused her previously. 

Later, Phoolan Devi became very famous among the lower caste villages. People used to call her Robin Hood, and later, she got the name Bandit Queen. 

In 1981, in Behmai village, 20 Thakurs were killed on the command of Phoolan Devi; after this massacre, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, resigned; two years later, Devi surrendered and spent 11 years in the Gwalior Prison.

After serving 11 years in jail, she was released in 1994, joined the Samajwadi Party and became a member of parliament in 1996. 

Phoolan Devi Surrendered to the Police 

After the Behmai massacre, police started searching for Phoolan Devi to encounter her and the whole gang. EX Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh was VP Singh, who suggested that Phoolan Devi surrender herself to the police so she would be free from the encounter. 

At the suggestion of VP Singh, she surrendered and saved her life. But all the Devi gang members were encountered except her. As per some sources people assumed that VP Singh did all these things to gain votes from lower caste voters who were well-wishers of Phoolan Devi. 

On 25 July 2001, Phoolan Devi was returning from the Parliament at her Ashoka Road residence in New Delhi.  Sher Singh Rana (Pankaj Singh Pundir) shot with a revolver outside her house. At that time, her age was just 37. She was brought to the hospital, but doctors declared she was dead. In August 2014, Sher Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs.100,000. 

There are too many stories of Phoolan Devi; there is still confusion as to which to believe and which not because she revealed information differently while asking about her life in some interviews.
