This is also why the places to visit in Shimoga are not restricted to the city centre. Some of the best attractions are spread across the district. So, keep enough time in your plan if you want to see waterfalls, hills and cultural sites.
Best 5 Places to Visit in Shimoga
If you have only two or three days, these are the five places I would put at the top of your Shimoga travel list. I have visited each one personally, and I will tell you exactly what to be expecting.
1. Jog Falls
Jog Falls is the biggest name on any list of places to visit in Shimoga. The waterfall is formed by the Sharavathi River and drops in four main sections known as Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. Karnataka Tourism lists it among the top rated waterfall attractions of the state.
The view changes a lot with the season. During the monsoon, the water flow becomes much stronger and the surrounding forest turns deep green. Mist often fills the area around the falls, making the view even more dramatic.
There are viewing areas where you can see the waterfall without taking a long walk. During suitable conditions, visitors can also descend around 1,400 steps towards the base. This should not be treated as a casual walk because the climb back can be tiring.
If you enjoy photography, visit early in the day. The light is softer and the crowd is usually easier to manage.
Jog Falls is also a good reason to explore Sagara and the nearby Sharavathi region instead of returning to the city immediately.
2. Kodachadri Hills
Kodachadri is one of the most thrilling places to visit in Shimoga for people who love hills, trekking and views. The peak rises to about 1,343 metres and is located in the Western Ghats of Shivamogga district.
The trek also has a spiritual side. Sarvajna Peetha is situated near the peak and is linked with the tradition of Adi Shankaracharya. Hidlumane Falls is another attraction connected with the trekking route.
If you are not used to long treks, plan carefully. The trail can become slippery during heavy rain. Good shoes, drinking water and rain protection are important.
October to February is a more comfortable period for trekking, while the monsoon gives you greener views but tougher trail conditions.
3. Sakrebyle Elephant Camp
For a family trip, Sakrebyle Elephant Camp can be a completely unique experience. It is located about 14 km from Shivamogga on the Shivamogga to Thirthahalli road. The camp is maintained by the Karnataka Forest Department.
The main attraction is the elephants. Visitors can see these large animals at close range and learn about their care and training.
This is one of those Shimoga places you can visit without having to spend the entire day. You can mix it with other attractions around Shivamogga and return to the city by afternoon.
Families with children may enjoy this stop more than a long trekking trail. However, always follow the instructions given by the staff. Wildlife tourism is best enjoyed when visitors give animals enough space.
4. Keladi and Ikkeri
If you enjoy history, do not skip Keladi and Ikkeri.
The Keladi area is linked with the Keladi Nayaka rulers and has temple architecture. Ikkeri is known for the Aghoreshwara Temple, which portrays the stone work of the old Keladi period. Karnataka Tourism lists Keladi and Ikkeri as important heritage stops in the Sagara region.
What I like about this part of the trip is that it gives you a break from the usual waterfall tourism. The stone work, temple design and quiet atmosphere create a very different mood.
You can combine Keladi and Ikkeri with a Sagara trip. If you are already travelling towards Jog Falls, this route is a sensible way to add history to your itinerary without making a separate long trip.
5. Honnemaradu
Honnemaradu is a good choice if you want a relaxing outdoor experience. The area is associated with the Sharavathi backwaters and offers scenic views of water and forest landscapes.
The wider Sharavathi region also includes attractions such as Linganamakki Reservoir and Sigandur. Karnataka Tourism lists these areas among the major attractions around the Sharavathi Valley.
Honnemaradu is better suited for people who want to slow down. Instead of rushing from one tourist spot to another, you can spend time enjoying the backwaters and surrounding landscape.
For a weekend plan, I would combine Honnemaradu with Jog Falls and Sagara.
What Is Shivamogga Famous For?
If you are wondering what is Shivamogga famous for, the simplest answer is its combination of nature, rivers, waterfalls, forests and culture.
Jog Falls is the most famous attraction. The district is also known for the Western Ghats, Sharavathi River, arecanut plantations, temples, wildlife areas and places linked with Kannada literature.
The Tunga and Bhadra rivers are also important to the region. They meet at Koodli near Shivamogga city and continue as the Tungabhadra River.
The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary maintains a strong population of tigers, and safaris here are a complete thrill.
Shimoga Weather
Shimoga weather changes significantly a bit across the year, and the variation can mean a lot for trip planning.
The region receives very heavy rainfall during the monsoon, which runs from June to September. This is actually the best time to see Jog Falls at full power, but roads can get slippery, so drive carefully.
From October to March, the weather becomes pleasant and cool, with temperatures generally staying between 15 and 28 degrees Celsius. Most travel guides agree that this stretch is the ideal window for sightseeing, trekking, and wildlife safaris.
Summer, from April to May, gets warm and dry, with daytime temperatures climbing above 35 degrees Celsius in some areas.
If you are sensitive to heat, avoid this period, or plan indoor activities during the afternoon. Always check local weather before starting a trek. Heavy rain can change road and trail conditions very quickly.
Shimoga Airport: How Can You Reach the City by Air?
Shimoga now has an airport. The official airport code is VOSH. The Airports Authority of India lists Shivamogga Airport as an operational airport, and its aeronautical information places it about 5.4 nautical miles southeast of Shivamogga city.
The airport was operationalised under the regional connectivity scheme in November 2023. AAI records also show Shivamogga routes connected with Hyderabad and Chennai under the regional connectivity network.
IndiGo currently operates flights connecting Shivamogga to Bengaluru, and additional routes continue to expand under India’s regional connectivity scheme.
If you cannot find a direct flight, Mangalore International Airport is another decent option, located about 188 kilometres away. Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, roughly 330 kilometres away, offers the widest range of connections if you are travelling from outside South India.
By train, Shivamogga Town Railway Station connects you to Bengaluru and Mysuru. By road, the city is well linked through National Highway 206 and other state highways, making a drive from Bengaluru, which takes around six to seven hours, a very manageable option too.

Best Time to Visit Shimoga

For trekking and outdoor travel, October to February is a safer choice for many visitors. The weather is generally more comfortable, and Kodachadri can offer clearer views.
